great explanation: quick question though? the scale seem ordinal, why use mean and not median? asking because this has always confused me in that I see researches do both!

rather than putting in the fixed value of 3.13 into the transform you could instead use the MEAN() function in the transform. It would then look like: if $source < MEAN(GPA) This means that if the GPA data changes then the transform variable changes to follow suite. If you click the little fx button it will show you all the available functions.

When I switch the variable type into Numeric all the values disappear, as they aren't numbers but values like : "Very low, low, average…"
